Wisconsin Gardener’s Tips for June 2022

Perennials

In order to keep some plants blooming as long as possible, deadhead old blooms. This will encourage the plant to bloom again! Some plants will only bloom once so stop into the nursery to find out more.

Shrubs

Blooming shrubs such as lilacs should be blooming, there is only a small blooming period so be sure to “stop and smell the lilacs”. If your heart is set on lilacs but you dread the shortened blooming period, consider planting a reblooming lilac, such as the “Bloomerang.” Similar in size as other dwarf species, this lilac variety will bloom again in the summer.

Trees

If you are planting trees this spring, we highly recommend fertilizing when planting ball and burlap trees. It is extremely important to keep them watered, however it is possible to drown plants so don’t overdo it. The ground should be damp and not saturated.

For help watering correctly, we do sell “donuts” and “water bags” which can be filled with water and in turn, will slowly release it throughout the day.

Lawn

In times of drought make sure to keep your lawn watered to prevent dormancy.

Keep an eye out for dead patches and grass that pulls up very easily. This can indicate grubs growing in the soil and eating the roots of your lawn. If left untreated grubs can destroy entire lawns.

Perennials

Now is a great time to install new perennials. The cooler, but not freezing, temperatures allow the plant to acclimate without being overly stressed. Don’t forget to fertilize especially in areas with poor soil quality.

Mulch now before your perennials get too big to ensure the best coverage. Established plants that have gotten too big for their spot may need to be divided, the smaller sections taken can be replanted in your garden to really fill in the space.

Shrubs

In order to encourage growth throughout the summer, fertilizer can be applied now without fear of it washing away in the “April showers”.

Trees

Your trees should be budding out and some flowering trees like the Red Buds and Crabapples are in Full Bloom. Stop and take a second to appreciate the beautiful show.

Lawn

It’s time to fertilize! For best results schedule a time for Heritage Hill Nursery landscapers to come apply high quality fertilizer and herbicide to prevent weeds. You may also want to spread seed in bare patches, however never put herbicides on newly seeded lawns.

When your lawn is somewhat dried, check to see if you need the lawn to be aerated. If the soil is highly compact or you have a thick layer of thatch, you may need to give us a call.

Wisconsin Gardener’s Tips for April 2022

Perennials

Take a look at your gardens and make sure they are clear of debris that will hinder plants from coming back.

For help with spring clean-up give us a call. We will ensure your beds are ready for an amazing summer season.

Shrubs

Some shrubs such as hydrangeas can be pruned in the early spring without affecting the seasons blooms.

Feel free to shape and remove last year’s growth. Be sure to double-check what shrubs can be pruned in the spring.

If plants like magnolias are pruned in the spring, buds that formed last year will be removed and it will not bloom.

Trees

Unfortunately, some trees will not make it through the winter, especially a harsh one. If any have died near your house or garage these will need to be removed to prevent them from falling and damaging the structures.

Lawn

Spring is here! Well hopefully anyway, now is the time to start spring clean-up. Consider cleaning up dog waste and sticks now, even if it snows again, you will not regret spreading out the workload.

When cleaning keep an eye out for dead spots that may need to be reseeded. Pull out your lawnmower and check the blades! If you mow your own lawn blades need to be sharp for the best cut.
