A Success Story
This Grafton homeowner came to us with a clear vision—she wanted her landscape to feel like an extension of her home, seamlessly enhancing the stonework and layout of the property. The front and one side of the house featured stone exteriors, which, while beautiful, presented a unique challenge: these areas retained less moisture, requiring hardy, drought-tolerant plants.
She also wanted to create visual interest around the home and throughout the property by using a variety of plant textures, colors, and heights—without overwhelming the natural elegance of the stonework. Colorful accents and layers were key, as was a landscape that would look polished and dynamic throughout the growing season.
To achieve the homeowner’s goals, we designed a landscape plan that brought together sophisticated contrast, vibrant seasonal color, and architectural structure.
Darker-colored shrubs like black lace elderberry and burgundy barberry were used strategically against the light stone façade to create bold contrast and draw the eye. These shrubs not only add visual depth but also maintain the tiered look the homeowner desired in the backyard.
Plants selected for drier conditions were installed near the stone-covered areas to ensure healthy growth despite less moisture retention. We used varieties like salvia, Russian sage, and ornamental grasses that thrive in well-draining soil and full sun.
Ornamental trees with striking features—such as a coral bark maple, weeping cherry, or Japanese lilac—were placed to create vertical interest and seasonal flair. These trees add a sculptural element to the landscape while providing shade and texture.
Flowering pots filled with annuals were interspersed throughout the planting beds, giving the homeowner the flexibility to change colors and themes seasonally. These vibrant pops of color act as living decor, bringing personality and charm to each section of the garden.
The final result is a landscape that feels curated, cohesive, and completely custom. Each element complements the stone architecture while adding contrast and vibrancy to the overall design. The darker shrubs make the home’s light exterior pop, the tiered planting layout gives depth and structure, and the ornamental trees offer year-round visual interest.
The homeowner now enjoys a property that’s not only functional and well-adapted to its environment but also rich in personality. With flowering containers as the finishing touch, she can update her landscape’s look each season with ease—keeping the pizzazz fresh all year long.
