Garden Center Sales Associates follow the direction of the Supervisor or Owners while typically performing a variety of tasks, which may include but not exclude, any combination of the following: assist customers in plant care and selection, manually write up sale slips, load/unload trucks, pricing, hooking up water lines in tree rows, weeding, pruning, watering, and fertilizing plants in the garden center. Assist with day-to-day upkeep of grounds and store for an overall professional appearance.
Successful applicants will already have a years’ experience in sales and preferably have a background in Horticulture or vast knowledge of midwestern trees/shrubs & perennial varieties and care. He/she must be able to handle the most difficult of personalities in a professional manor, work in stressful situations, have an aptitude for basic math, hand write and use a calculator/credit card machine for sales, enjoy the outdoors including all weather variations, deal with bugs and getting dirty. The applicant will have proficiency in both written and oral skills, possess good organization and multi-tasking skills, be self-motivated, energetic and can self-supervise, follow direction, be a team player, and be flexible in routine.
While performing different jobs in the garden center, the Sales Associate will need to be comfortable using a variety of equipment ranging from but not limited to: pruners, shovels, utility knives, punch guns, price guns, hand carts, wagons, sprayers, spreaders, to the more complicated equipment such as tractors and skid loaders.
Physical requirements include but not excluded to: occasional lifting 40#’s from ground to waist level; carrying 15-25#’s repeatedly throughout the length of the greenhouse as needed; pushing/pulling hand carts/wagons containing up to 75#’s across the length of the greenhouse as needed; frequent bending, reaching above head or kneeling throughout the course of the workday.
Due to the nature of the business, the number of days/hours will not be guaranteed. Instead, the # of days/hours the Sales Associate works will depend on the needs of the garden center throughout the season & how flexible the applicant can be with scheduling. An applicant may be scheduled for regular FT all season if the need exists and he/she is flexible, otherwise hours could drop down to PT by mid-season.
Typical schedule would be Mon-Friday (10-6 pm), every other Sat (8-4 pm), Sun (10-4 pm)
**when working weekends, there will be scheduled time off during the week
The season typically runs from April 1st – November 10th (students start/end times will vary) and therefore, so will this position of employment. Although we encourage employees to return to the positions previously hired for, there is no employment guarantee of re-hire or re-hire to the same position and pay. The employee will be notified during the month of March of the new year if the previous position held is still available.
